Easy Last Minute DIY Mother's Day Gifts

Mother's Day is this weekend, did you forget? That's okay. Above & Beyond Roofing has your back with these easy, last minute DIY Mother's Day gift ideas. No matter how you choose to celebrate this weekend, the most important thing is that you show mom just how much you appreciate all she does for you.

Breakfast in Bed

One of the easiest gifts you can give your mom on Mother's Day is the gift of not having to prepare breakfast for everyone. Get up early and bring her breakfast in bed. It can be something as simple as fruit and yogurt, or whip up some tasty pancakes or eggs and bacon for mom to enjoy.

A Homemade Card

Often times store bought cards get read and then end up in the trash. Give your mother something made with love that she can cherish. Grab some art supplies you have around the house and create a card yourself. You could even add a picture of the two of you together. This is a great DIY gift for younger children, as they can make it their own, there's no set of instructions to follow.

Sugar Body Scrub

Pamper mom with this simple DIY sugar scrub made from ingredients that are likely already in your pantry! To make the scrub, you'll need to mix together about 2 1/2 cups of Sugar in the Raw, 3/4 cup white granulated sugar, 1/4 cup almond oil, and 4-5 Tbsp of vanilla extract (or coconut, almond, orange, etc.). Grab a glass jar with a lid to put the scrub in. Find some ribbon, paper and markers to decorate the jar with and you're done.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Chocolate is the way to a mother's heart! Instead of buying her a pre-packaged box of chocolates, why not make her a homemade chocolaty treat? Chocolate covered strawberries are easy to make and even easier to eat! Pick up some fresh strawberries and chocolate chips (milk, dark or white chocolate) and voila, you have a treat for mom!

"10 Things I Love About You" Jar

This is an easy and thoughtful gift that you can easily make from items around the house. Grab a mason jar or some other container with a lid. If you can't find one, you can make a book out of paper instead of a jar. Decorate the jar with papers and markers, creating a label that reads "10 Things I Love About You." Then cut some paper into 10 small pieces. Write one thing you love about your mom on each piece and place it in the jar. Pulling them out of the jar and reading them is sure to put a smile on your mom's face.

Happy Mother's Day from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks roofing company! We hope you have a wonderful weekend spent with family and friends. With summer quickly approaching, now's the time to think about the condition of your roof. Give mom piece of mind knowing her roof will withstand whatever summer storms may come our way. Call 573-302-0354 to schedule your free roof inspection at the Lake of the Ozarks today.

4 Roof Facts New Homeowners Should Know

As a new homeowner, there are plenty of things you need to learn about caring for and maintaining your investment. One of the most important aspects of your home for you to understand is the roof, and this is the one area that many new homeowners overlook. Today's blog from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks roofing company offers some roofing information that is beneficial for new homeowners to know.

1. Your Roof Can Affect Your Energy Costs.

When your roof is in good shape, you will experience lower energy costs. If your roof has a leak or is not properly ventilated, heat or cool air, depending on the time of the year can escape, causing your heater or AC to work harder. When those appliances are working harder, they use more energy, which means a higher utility bill for you. A well-maintained roof can save you money in the long run on both utilities and roof repair costs.

2. Clogged Gutters Can Damage Your Roof.

Home maintenance, such as gutter cleaning, can easily get pushed off for seemingly more important tasks. However, cleaning your gutters is actually one of the most important things you can do to protect your roof. Your gutters play a key role in protecting your home from water damage. Their job is to re-direct water away from the vulnerable places of your home, such as the roof and the foundation. When you fail to clean them, they don't work properly and water can't flow freely off the roof as it should. Due to the water pooling up on the roof, you could experience roof leaks. As a new homeowner, it's important that you have your gutters regularly cleaned, whether you do it yourself or hire someone for the job.

3. Roof Leaks Aren't Always Obvious.

When you think about a leaky roof, you might picture a gaping hole in your ceiling. Unfortunately, leaks aren't always that obvious. In fact, they can go undetected for quite some time, causing all sorts of other issues in your home. This is why regular Lake of the Ozarks roof inspections are important. Many times, rain water will slip in around a missing nail or slide its way along the underlayment before soaking into your ceiling and insulation. Bubbling paint on the ceiling, wall discoloration or mold growth could all be signs that you have a leak somewhere. If you suspect a leak, don't hesitate to give us a call to come out and look at it.

4. Roofs Don't Last Forever

While roofs can last a very long time, often times longer than you'll live in the home, they don't last forever. Asphalt roofs need replacing approximately every 15-20 years. When purchasing a new home, it's important to understand the age and quality of the roof, as well as when any repairs may have been completed on it. Careful maintenance can help extend the life of your roof. Be sure to schedule bi-annual roof inspections to ensure it's in tip-top shape.

Above & Beyond Roofing is here for all your Lake of the Ozarks roof repair needs. 4 Summer Roof Problems to Watch Out For

Summer is quickly approaching! While winter may be the harshest season for wear and tear on your roof, you still need to care for roofs during the summer. The summer season comes with its own set of roofing problems that you need to be aware of. In today's blog from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks roofing company, we address some of these issues you'll want to watch out for this summer.

1. Summer Storm Damage

Summer storms bring heavy rains, high winds and sometimes even hail, which can all affect our roofs. Wind can lift shingles, allowing water to get up under them. Hail can puncture your shingles, also making space for water to infiltrate your roof. Seemingly minor issues could turn out to be a bigger issue if rain water gets to the roof deck and starts leaking into your home. After a storm hits, it's a good idea to have your roof inspected for any damage. When an inspection is needed this summer, call 573-302-0354 to schedule your FREE roof inspection at the Lake of the Ozarks.

2. Moss & Algae Growth

The summer season offers the perfect conditions for moss and algae to grow. Not only is this growth unsightly, but over time, it can affect the integrity of your roof. Moss and algae harbor moisture, which can lead to water damage and rotting of the wood underneath. If you notice moss and algae beginning to take over your roof, you might want to consider having a professional come clean it off before it starts causing problems for your shingles and the roof deck underneath.

3. Dry and Cracked Shingles

Due to the sun's UV rays, shingles can actually dry our and crack over time. Dry shingles can eventually fall off, leaving sections of your roof with little to no protection from the elements. While you don't need to worry about this with a new roof, older roofs, especially those that haven't been properly maintained, could be susceptible to this summer roofing problem. Dry or cracked shingles could be a sign that your roof is nearing the end of its life and could need replaced soon.

4. Ventilation Problems

Along with summer comes hot humid temperatures. As hot air rises, if your attic doesn't have a proper ventilation system installed, things could become quite problematic. If hot air gets trapped in your attic, this creates excess moisture issues up there. Moisture is not good for your roof and can easily shorten the life span of your roof, not to mention to possibility of roof leaks and mold issues. You might consider having a professional ensure your ventilation system is appropriate for the size and style of your home.

For all your Lake of the Ozarks roofing needs this summer, contact none other than Above & Beyond Roofing. From inspections and repairs to entire re-roofs and new construction, we've got you covered. We specialize in both residential and commercial roofing; there's no job too big or too small for our team to handle!

Hail Stones and Roof Damage

While hail can accompany storms anytime throughout the year, hail stones are most prevalent during the summer season in the Midwest. The majority of thunderstorms rumble through the Midwest now through August. Often times you'll just seen rain, thunder and lightning, but other times this severe weather will be accompanied by hail and tornadoes. Keep reading to learn more about hail, how it forms and the damage it could do to your roof.

What are Hail Stones?

Hail stones form when tiny particles are swept up high into a storm system by an updraft. Water vapor condenses on the particles and then when it gets to a certain height, it freezes. These small hailstones can be lifted into the storm system multiple times, therefore increasing in size before finally falling out. Hail stones can fall for one of two reasons; either a downdraft sends them falling to the ground or the hail becomes too large for the updraft to overcome the force of gravity. Hail stones can be any size from tiny pebbles or dime-sized to golf ball- or even baseball-sized.

Hail Storms in Missouri

On average, Missouri can expect 2-3 hail storms a year. Most of the time that hail will be pea-sized and not cause much damage. However, on occasion, that hail can be larger and cause major damage to vehicles and roofs. Each year, hail causes nearly $1 billion in damages across the country, mostly to property and agriculture. When hail and wind combine, they can be quite destructive. Hail stones that are larger than 1 1/4" in diameter can easily damage heavy composite shingles or wood shake shingles.

Roof Damage from Hail

The extent of hail damage to your roof depends on several factors from wind speeds to the size and density of the hail stones. The roofing material of your home also plays a factor in the type of damage sustained. Hail damage to asphalt shingles can look much different than that of wood shake shingles, metal roofs or tile roofs. Hail damage to your asphalt roof can be random damage with no discernible pattern. In addition, you might see small spots that are black in color, loss of granules and/or asphalt that appears shiny. Watch for granules in your gutters and downspouts. Loss of granules can lead to accelerated aging of your roof and makes your roof more vulnerable to the elements and future storms. Dented metal flashing is also a sign that your roof may have been impacted by hail.

If you suspect hail damage, or any other type of storm damage, to your roof, give Above & Beyond Roofing a call at 573-302-0354. We offer free roof inspections at the Lake of the Ozarks, and can also provide you with a free cost estimate of what's needed to repair any damage your roof may have sustained. Common Roof Support Problems

While the shingles come top of mind when you think about a roof, there are other aspects of your roof to also be concerned with. Since the roof supports are hidden away, many homeowners don't think about them until there's a major issue. Today's blog from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks roofer discusses some common roof support problems that homeowners should be aware of.

Sagging Roof

There are a variety of things that could cause a sagging roof. While more common in older properties, this issue can also occur with a new roof that was improperly installed. The use of incorrectly sized strutting beams or the wrong material for the beams can cause your roof to sag. A longer or heavier roof may need to be supported with more durable beams, such as steel instead of just wood. Another cause of a sagging roof is if the roof weight changes from when the home was originally built. Switching from asphalt shingles to cement tiles adds extra weight to your roof that the beams may not be able to support. Beams and other supports need to be considered during any major roofing changes, such as a re-roof.

Rot and Mold Growth

Roof leaks, if not caught in the early stages, can lead to major structural issues like rot and mold growth on the beams and rafters. Leaks that soak the roof supports repeatedly will eventually cause damage and rot in even the toughest supports. Leaks can have many causes such as from animals looking for a new nest, long-term shingle damage or condensation from poorly ventilated attics. If your roof supports show signs of rot and/or mold growth, they will need to be replaced. Failure to do so could lead to a roof collapse.

Sagging Floor

While issue with your floor may seem more like a foundation issue than a roof issue, that's not always the case. It's very important that roof braces land on designated interior "load-bearing" walls. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for builders to put the braces on the closest/most convenient walls. Over time, this can lead to floor sagging because most floor joists are not sized for roof loads. Poorly braced rafters can also cause sagging roofs, crooked rooftops and other serious structural problems. Structural issues like these can be difficult to solve without major renovations.

Roof Damage from Summer Storms

The National Weather Service estimates 10,000 severe storms across the U.S. every summer. From heavy winds and rains to hail and tornadoes, these summer storms can wreak havoc on the exterior of your home, particularly your roof. In today's blog, your favorite Lake of the Ozarks roofing company discusses possible roof damage from summer storms, and offers some ways to prepare your roof for the summer storm season.

Summer Storm Roof Damage

The majority of homeowners will just experience minor summer storm damage. This can include missing, loose, lifted or damaged roof shingles. Wind-driven debris often cause the most roof damage during summer storms. Summer storms can knock trees, power lines or poles onto roofs, puncturing shingles or even causing structural damage. High winds can exacerbate roof defects that are already present, such as blisters, delaminations or neglected termination points. Severe summer storms can also cause flash flooding, which can lead to a fast accumulation of water on your roof. This can burden the gutter system with a large amount of weight, which can lead to roof and gutter damage. Roof leaks are also fairly common during the summer storm season. An unaddressed roof leak can lead to other issues, such as mold or wood rot in the attic, causing structural damage to your home. In severe conditions, where roof issues were already present, a roof collapse could occur.

Preparing Your Roof for Summer Storms

There are several preventative maintenance tasks that you can perform to protect your roof from summer storms.

  • Schedule a FREE roof inspection at the Lake of the Ozarks with Above & Beyond Roofing! We'll check the condition of your roof to ensure it will protect your home from summer storms.
  • Trim back any tree branches that are hanging near or over your roof. Be sure to remove any dead trees or limbs from your property.
  • Have your gutters cleaned and checked to ensure they are in proper working order. They need to be able to handle large amounts of water.
  • Secure any outdoor furniture or other items that could become a projectile during high winds or a tornado.
  • After a severe wind or hail storm, schedule a post-storm roof inspection. By addressing minor repair issues immediately, you can prevent more serious roof problems from occurring.

Well-maintained roof systems can weather these summer storms much more easily. For all your Lake of the Ozarks roofing needs, trust none other than Above & Beyond Roofing. From inspections to repairs, we're here to help! There's no job too big or too small for our experienced roofing contractors at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Don't Damage Your Roof with Fireworks

The 4th of July holiday is upon us! One favorite tradition for this red, white and blue holiday is shooting off fireworks. While these beautiful lights can provide enjoyment for all ages, they can also bring increased safety issues, not just to you, but also your property. While quality roofing material has been treated for fire resistance, some conditions can still lead to fires. In today's blog, your favorite roofing company at the Lake of the Ozarks roofing company offers tips on how to stay safe while shooting off fireworks this weekend.

1. Don't Shoot Fireworks Toward Homes.

It sounds pretty obvious, but it's not a good idea to shoot fireworks toward homes. If you live in a neighborhood with homes close together and little yard space, you might want to avoid shooting them off at your house. Some cities and states actually have laws against fireworks. When lighting fireworks, be sure to do so in a spot with plenty of open space. It's very difficult to control where a firework goes after it's been lit. You want to avoid fireworks, or firework debris, from landing on your roof (or someone else's) altogether.

2. Clear Your Roof of Debris.

It's much easier for a firework to start a fire on your roof if there's something flammable up there. Before shooting off any fireworks, be sure to clear your roof of any debris. Dry leaves, sticks and other debris tend to gather in roof valleys and gutters. These type of materials can easily turn a small spark into a blazing fire. By clearing your roof prior to the fireworks, you'll decrease the risk of a house fire if a firework does accidentally land on your roof.

3. Trim Back Overhanging Trees.

Trees that are close to your home can also catch on fire if hit with fireworks. If a tree branch that's hanging over your roof catches fire, those flames can easily fall off and catch your roof on fire too. Avoid that situation altogether by trimming back any trees prior to shooting off fireworks, especially any dead limbs or branches. This is a great tip even if you're not shooting off fireworks, as summer storms can cause tree branches to fall on your home. They don't have to be on fire to cause damage to your roof.

If you're concerned that fireworks, tree branches or anything else has compromised your roof this summer, give Above & Beyond Roofing a call at 573-302-0354 to schedule a free roof inspection at the Lake of the Ozarks. With more than 100 years' combined experience, our staff is here to take care of all your roofing needs!

7 Common Causes of Roof Leaks

Along with the warmer weather comes summer storms! As those rains are coming down, you notice a leak in your roof. Where did it come from? How do I fix it? Questions like these are running through your head. Today's blog from the best roofing company at the Lake of the Ozarks discusses some of the top causes of roof leaks - and when you need a roof leak fixed, trust none other than Above & Beyond Roofing!

1. Broken Shingles.

The most common cause of a roof leak is broken or missing shingles. High winds and heavy rains, that come with summer storms, could be the culprit of your broken shingles. You'll want to have a roofing professional at the Lake of the Ozarks come out to do the repairs before the issue causes more major roofing problems.

2. Cracked Flashing.

Flashing are thin pieces of metal that are installed under shingles and on the joints of your roof in order to create a water-resistant barrier. Roof vents are also often sealed by placing some flashing around the opening and slipping a tight, rubber boot over the area where the pipe peeks out of the roof. Roofers often use tar to seal the flashing together, and over time, that can corrode and/or break. In addition, elements such as wind and rain can cause the flashing to crack. Issues with the flashing can allow water to get under there and cause a roof leak.

3.  Clogged Gutters.

Another fairly common reason for roof leaks is clogged gutters. If you can see leaves or other debris sticking out of your gutter when you look up at your roof, that's a problem. Your gutters are meant to help water travel away from your roof. When those gutters are blocked, that water stops along the roof line. It pools up in one area of the roof, giving it an opportunity to seep through any cracks.

4. Improperly Installed Skylights.

Penetrations on your roof, such as chimneys or skylights, are areas that are prone to leaks. If you have a skylight that was improperly installed, a leak is bound to happen. If you notice wet spots or consistent dripping around your skylight, either the skylight was installed improperly, the insulation along the skylights edges has decayed or its a flashing issue.

5. Cracked Chimney.

Wear and tear along the mud cap or mortared areas around the top of the chimney can lead to a roof leak. Mortar is essentially just a thick mixture of water, sand and cement. It erodes easily in harsh weather conditions. Be on the lookout for any holes in the mortared joints where the chimney connects with the roof, and also watch for loose flashing or shingles in the surrounding area.

6. An Ice Dam.

During the winter months, ice dams are common. The heat from your attic causes some of the snowfall on your roof to melt. The water will then run to the roofs edge and re-freeze. This prevents new melted snow from properly draining off your roof, which can lead to a roof leak.

7. Improperly Sealed Valleys.

An area where two place of the roof come together is called a valley. This is a common area for roof leaks to occur as well. If the valleys are not sealed properly, rainwater can get inside as it runs down this sloped part of the roof. You can detect an issue by searching for wet spots that run along the seams of your roof. This issue can be caused by several reasons, either the sealing wasn't done properly in the first place, it may have cracked when being stepped on, or an excess of rain and ice may have caused it to erode over time.
